What is Drug and Alcohol Detox?

When you drink or use a drug, the substance typically influences the body with chemicals, hormones, and neurotransmitters. Over time and heavy use, the body adapts to these changes, resulting in a disorder known as chemical or physical dependence. Here, the type of dependence heavily depends on the substance in question. Alcohol, for example, typically results in physical dependence by influencing Gabapentin (GABA) and serotonin production, which impacts the central nervous system. When you withdraw, the reduction in GABA production results in seizures as the central nervous system adjusts. This process is different for many substances, because drugs like opioids, benzodiazepines, and cocaine affect different neurotransmitters and hormones.

Detox is the process of medically managing physically withdrawing from a drug or alcohol, with the goal of reducing symptoms ensuring the health of the patient. Holistic detox takes this a step further, offering mental and emotional support, counseling, and medication so that you stay comfortable throughout the process.

The medical staff at Sanctuary of Transformation understand that detox heavily depends on the individual, past substance abuse, genetics, and mental state. That’s why we work hard to deliver a fully personalized detox program, to support your mental, emotional, and physical needs as you withdraw.

Our detox center is in Laguna Hills, Southern California. Once you enter our doors, you’ll receive medical monitoring, full support from staff, and prescription medication on an as-needed basis to ensure your full recovery.

Signs and Symptoms of Detox

Most people will experience withdrawal symptoms when quitting a drug or alcohol. While many of us experience similar symptoms, withdrawal can be hugely personal. Symptoms and the severity of symptoms will heavily depend on factors such as the substance, genetics, weight, diet, health, length and volume of abuse, and even gender. In some cases, unseen epigenetic factors can result in massive changes to how an individual reacts to a substance and to withdrawal. This means that your journey through detox is a hugely personal experience and your symptoms may vary from very moderate to quite severe, even with the same substance. That’s why your stay at Sanctuary of Transformation will begin with a thorough mental and physical assessment to determine the level and type of care you need to move through withdrawal and into recovery.

In most cases, withdrawal symptoms will begin within 1–4 days of your final dose, will worsen over the first 3-5 days, and then will plateau and begin to abate.

Stimulants – 48 hours
Benzodiazepines – 4-days but up to 4 weeks for slow-release variants
Opioids / Prescription Pain Pills – 4-7 days
Long-acting opioids – 1-2 weeks
Heroin – 4-7 days
Alcohol – 1-2 weeks
Cannabis – 4-7 days

These symptoms typically include but are not limited to:

Cough and runny nose
Sweating and fever
Panic attacks
Sleeplessness or insomnia
Tremors, shivers, or shaking
Memory fog
Inability to concentrate
General malaise
Nausea and vomiting
Stomach pain
Heart palpitations or arrhythmia
Muscle pain

Depending on you and your history of substance abuse, these symptoms can be moderate to severe. You can expect more specific withdrawal symptoms depending on the substance you are using.

Alcohol Detox

Alcohol interacts with the brain and the central nervous system, which can mean that withdrawal is difficult and dangerous on your own. Medical detox at Sanctuary of Transformation includes medication to stabilize the body and reduce the chance of seizures, therapy, and counseling. Individuals with a lighter addiction can begin accessing therapy and treatment during detox, including counseling and support to reduce the trauma of withdrawal. Alcohol detox should not be attempted without medical monitoring, because it can be dangerous and can lead to life-threatening complications like delirium tremens.

Benzodiazepine Detox

Millions of people have prescriptions to benzodiazepines like Valium, Xanax, Lorazepam, and Klonopin, but when you become addicted, these drugs can be difficult and dangerous to quit. It’s important to seek out medical detox, like we offer at Sanctuary of Recovery, to ensure you have medical monitoring during detox and medication on hand in case something goes wrong. Benzo detox typically takes several weeks and might result in severe complications such as tremors, seizures, hallucinations, and delirium.

Prescription Painkiller Detox

Prescription opioids like Vicodin and Hydrocodone are critical for managing pain after surgery, but if you’re addicted, getting clean can be difficult. Depending on your circumstances, you might need pain pill detox or detox followed by rehabilitation and addiction treatment. The staff at Sanctuary of Transformation can assess your condition to help you determine what you need, while offering the safe and comfortable space to recover from your chemical dependence.

Heroin Detox

Detoxing from a street opioid like heroin can be more difficult than detoxing from prescription painkillers, but the withdrawal symptoms are often very similar.

Amphetamine Detox

Amphetamines are extremely difficult to withdraw from, resulting in strong depression, anxiety, and aggression. It’s crucial that you seek out medical monitoring during withdrawal to ensure that you can safely move through the process. While less physically dangerous, it is more important that you have mental and emotional support in the form of counseling and therapy during amphetamine detox.

Your withdrawal symptoms will depend on you and your body. It’s important to begin detox after a consultation with your doctor or one of the medical professionals at Sanctuary of Transformation, to ensure you are being monitored, and to take things slowly so you can recover in a safe and healthy way.

Our Orange County detox center offers medically monitored detox with acute and sub-acute treatment options.

We ask you to answer a medical questionnaire during a phone screening. During intake, we’ll also request additional information and will follow up with a thorough mental and physical evaluation to ensure that placement and personalization are right for you. This will include a toxicology test.

When you arrive at our holistic detox center in Southern California, you’re coming home for however long you’re staying. In most cases, you’ll share a room with one or more other guests, you’ll be asked to bring your own supplies, and we will check you for drugs and alcohol when you enter our doors. The detox clinic remains a drug and alcohol-free zone. However, we do supply nutritious and delicious meals cooked on-site, entertainment, and amenities to keep you entertained and challenged throughout your stay.

Sanctuary of Transformation offers acute and sub-acute detox options, ideal for individuals with moderate to severe chemical dependencies.

  • Acute – Acute detox includes a strict detox structure complete with medication to stabilize symptoms. In most cases, you will be on bed rest. This is ideal for individuals with severe addictions or those dependent on drugs with a particularly strong withdrawal profile, such as benzodiazepines.
  • Sub-Acute – Sub-acute detox uses a lighter structure and lighter medication, but still offers medication to stabilize symptoms. You can typically begin taking advantage of therapy and treatment at this time.

In some cases, you may also choose social detox, where you do not receive medication to stabilize symptoms. This option is only ideal for individuals not likely to suffer complications. Every type of detox is offered on an inpatient basis at our detox center in Laguna Hills, Southern California. Every treatment option also includes full support from staff, 24/7 medical monitoring, emotional support, and therapy to help you move through the detox period.

Therapy and Counseling

In most cases, detox is just the first step towards rehabilitation and recovery. For this reason, we typically begin offering behavioral therapy such as cognitive behavioral therapy and dialectical behavioral therapy during detox. This is important because it helps you to build a firm foundation with which to move into the rest of your recovery. You’ll also have access to many of the complimentary therapy options available at Sanctuary of Transformation including yoga, mindfulness, sound bath healing, holistic nutrition, art therapy, nature therapy, Boom fitness, binaural sound, and much more. We believe in treating the whole person, in helping you to destress, to cut out harmful substances, and to relieve your body of mental and physical toxins together, in one holistic detox process.

Do I Need Drug or Alcohol Detox?

If you’re struggling with substance abuse, you probably have a chemical dependency. These dependencies happen when you use the same substance for longer periods of time, the body adjusts, and you experience withdrawal symptoms on quitting. While some people can easily make it through withdrawal on their own, withdrawal can be difficult and dangerous. Going “cold turkey” on many drugs can result in hospitalization. And, simply quitting a drug is not usually enough to stay clean or sober long-term.

Our Orange County holistic detox program offers medical monitoring, medication assisted treatment for withdrawal, and a host of therapies intended to help you clear your mind, find motivation to change, and build the mental tools you need to do so. We don’t just treat the symptoms, which are drug or alcohol addiction. We treat you as a whole person with complex internal problems that resulted in a substance abuse problem. Without diagnosing and treating those issues, you will likely be in the same place that led you to seeking drugs or alcohol in the first place.

Holistic detox helps you to safely quit drugs and alcohol, with minimized risk of complications, while setting the framework for a complete recovery so you can rebuild your life. Detox can be dangerous, even symptoms like diarrhea can result in dehydration and death. And, if you have existing health or mental health problems, it becomes more difficult to withdraw safely. Seeking a comprehensive, holistic detox program like the one at Sanctuary of Recovery will help you through that in safety, dignity, and comfort.
